First Devlog - Concept and ideas.
Hello everyone!
We want to start this devlog by wishing you all a happy new year! Let’s make 2024 a perfect year for game development!
A lot of you have been asking us if we had any plans on continuing the Mycopsychosys series and we’re thrilled to announce that in fact, we are! We’re very glad to present you the new project that we’ve been working on for the past month!
Mycopsychosys: PCD
“Mycopsychosys:PCD” will be a top-down 2D pixel art horror RPG that will chronologically precede the first entry of the series. In this prequel, the player will follow the steps of Hugo as he joins the plague control department and meets his peculiar colleague and the rest of the crew!
What’s new?
Everything! Or at least almost everything! From the game style, to the art style, even the game engine! We’re planning on changing a lot of things from the first entry of the series so stick with us:
For starters, we’re planning on leaving the visual novel genre behind and we want to adopt the horror RPG genre. We’re taking inspiration from a lot of different 2D RPG’s but don’t expect a classic RPG maker experience, we really want to create something new and fresh.
The art department will also receive some changes. We will keep the dimensions to 2 but we’ll deviate to something that all the team hold very dearly in our hearts: PixelArt! For the moment, we’re planning on this game to be a top-down pixel art RPG.
As we mentioned earlier , we’re planning on leaving Ren’py behind and we’re currently working using Godot, a new free and open source game engine that’s very promising and that will satisfy all of our new needs. Mechanically, we want to take some inspiration from the game Persona 5. In said game, there’s a time mechanic that allows the player to live the game day by day, consuming actions to perform certain tasks and progressing the game. We don’t want to implement all of that step by step but it’s the format of gameplay that we want to build in our game.
From the lore point of view, we’re planning on giving a different perspective to the infection that we all already know. Being a member of the PCD has some advantages, more specifically the access to privileged information. You also have to deal with the constant threat of death in the hands of the spores but hey, every job has its perks and quirks am I right? We also want to give more hints and information regarding the origin of the spores and its mutations.
Current status of the project
We have a lot of cool new ideas and we’ve done a lot of concept art that we can’t wait to show you all in future updates
From the programming side, we’ve been implementing all the foundational systems that will support the gameplay. Right now there’s nothing worth showing (because we don’t have any gameplay yet) but it’s still very important work.
Another thing we want to improve on is the communication with the fans of the series. We believe that devlogs are fine but we don’t want to spam our itch followers with too many notifications, that’s why we’re launching a discord server!
Here you’ll be able to closely follow the development of the game with weekly updates! We also want to closely follow your suggestions so if you have something to say to us feel free to visit!
Lastly, we would like this to be our small community. We love to talk about our projects and the universe that we’ve created so if you just want to talk with us or with other fans, post fanart or any other form of interaction (simping for Hugo in the fanart channel for example) this is your place!
We’re thrilled to start this new project and we want all of you to accompany us in the process.
Stay safe and happy sporestorm!
